Why Is My Internet Slow at Night?

If your connection is fine at 10am and unusable at 9pm, the equipment is probably not the problem. Here is what is really happening.

The short answer: everyone is online at once

Internet capacity is shared. Cable systems share a node among neighbors, cellular networks share a tower sector among everyone in range, and satellite systems share a beam. Between roughly 7pm and 11pm local time, streaming, gaming and video calls peak simultaneously across an entire neighborhood or tower footprint. The capacity did not shrink; the number of people dividing it went up.

This is why an evening slowdown that clears by morning is almost never a hardware fault. Hardware faults do not keep office hours.

How to confirm it is congestion

Run a speed test at three times: mid-morning, late afternoon and 9pm. A consistent large gap at 9pm is congestion.

Test on a device connected by Ethernet, or standing next to the router, to remove Wi-Fi from the equation.

Check whether latency and jitter rise along with the speed drop. Congestion typically raises both; a failing cable or radio usually causes packet loss without a clean time-of-day pattern.

Check whether one device or all devices are affected. If it is one device, the network is not the issue.

Causes that look like congestion but are not

Wi-Fi channel interference

Neighbors come home in the evening and turn on their own access points, microwaves, baby monitors and Bluetooth devices. On the crowded 2.4 GHz band this can be indistinguishable from carrier congestion. Moving devices onto 5 GHz, or letting a modern router choose a less crowded channel, sometimes resolves an evening slowdown entirely.

Background updates and backups

Operating system updates, cloud photo backups and game patches are often scheduled for evening or overnight. A single console downloading a 90 GB update will flatten a household connection while it runs.

Every phone, TV, camera, thermostat and speaker holds a connection. The evening is when the most of them are simultaneously active. Routers with older hardware and low client limits degrade noticeably under that load even if the incoming connection is fine.

Data policy deprioritization

Some plans deprioritize traffic after a monthly threshold. The effect is invisible off-peak and very visible at peak, because deprioritized traffic is served after everyone else's. Move bandwidth-heavy tasks off-peak: schedule backups, updates and large downloads for overnight.

Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz for devices that are close to the router; leave 2.4 GHz for distant, low-bandwidth devices.

Improve router placement — central, elevated, away from metal and appliances. Weak signal amplifies the effect of congestion.

Lower streaming quality on secondary screens during peak hours; 4K on three TVs at once is a real bandwidth load.

Use a wired connection for the one device where it matters most, usually a work computer or console.

If you are on a shared wired system with chronic evening congestion, a cellular connection on a different network is worth testing, because it does not share the same node.

When switching providers actually helps

Changing providers only helps if the new connection uses different infrastructure. Moving from one reseller to another on the same physical plant will reproduce the same evening pattern. Moving from a congested cable node to a cellular connection, or the reverse, changes the shared resource entirely — which is why some households see a dramatic improvement and others see none.
