Most households buy more speed than they use and less stability than they need. Here is how to size a plan honestly.
What each activity actually consumes
Browsing, email, social: 1–5 Mbps per person.
HD video streaming: roughly 5 Mbps per stream.
4K video streaming: roughly 15–25 Mbps per stream.
Video calls: 2–4 Mbps down and a similar amount up per call; upload is the constraint.

Three numbers that matter more than download speed
Video calls, cloud backups, streaming to an audience and sending large files all live on the upload path. Many plans advertise a large download and a small upload, and the small number is the one you feel.
The delay before data starts moving. Gaming, video calls and even ordinary browsing feel better on a low-latency connection than on a high-speed, high-latency one. Satellite connections illustrate this: fast on paper, sluggish in interaction.
A connection that delivers 80 Mbps all day is more useful than one that peaks at 300 Mbps and collapses to 15 Mbps every evening. Test at peak hours, not just when the house is empty.
Why your measured speed differs from the plan
Advertised speeds describe the connection to your home, not the speed at a laptop three rooms away over Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi loss, device age, background traffic, server distance and shared-network congestion all reduce the measured number. On wireless home internet, real-world speed also varies with signal quality and network conditions, so results differ by address and by hour.
